We would like to introduce everyone to Augustus Loi, our very first male interview here on the ERIIN blog! Although we’ve only been friends for about a month, Augustus always has us in stitches with his wit and sense of humor, simultaneously wowing us with nuggets of knowledge. Augustus is a former architecture student, fashion writer and editor, and is currently working on Fashion Space, a social website that allows users to browse and create their own magazine online. Fashion Space is founded by Danielle, who was kind enough to invite us to their office to photograph Augustus. We spent a lovely afternoon with the both of them and chatted about fashion, entrepreneurship, dogs, food and just about everything under the sun.

The first time we met Augustus, he wore his blazer over his shoulders, loafers on his feet and a huge Longchamp bag on his arm. We could tell that we had just met a man who takes his fashion seriously. However, it was only at our shoot where we realized just how enthusiastic Augustus was about styling himself. In preparation for the shoot, he literally dragged a third of his wardrobe to the office and even installed a make-shift area for his clothing in the corner of the room! Armed with a selection of his favorite classics, a box full of bow ties, watches, cuff links and rings, as well as his collection of loafers and sneakers, Augustus was most definitely our most well-prepped interviewee yet!

How would you describe your style?
It’s easier to say what I’m not. I find it quite noveau riche to look too pulled together – but I guess bow-ties don’t tie themselves. Imagine, if you will, a venn diagram – it’s all about the subsets, not the extremes. I like classic pieces reinterpreted in the language of the present, and timeless pieces subverted – perverted, some might say – by logic. Could Albert Thurston have imagined his suspenders being worn with short-shorts? Probably not.
Frank Stella apocryphally described minimalist art as carving into space. I wouldn’t exactly call myself a minimalist, but I like the idea of carving niches out of a space-time-social continuum.

Do you have any particular dressing philosophies or strategies?
I took architecture for a year, but that year was quite seminal. Clothing is architecture for the body – and not necessarily in a Hussain Chalayan, sculptural way. The structure should be designed around movement. Materiality must respond to context – historical, geographical, narrative. Juhani Pallasmaa’s Eyes of the Skin seems almost as fit to describe clothing as it is architecture. I find it helps to plan my wardrobe in an Excel sheet – yep, I do that. I like how Yohji Yamamoto has worked almost his entire career in black cotton, Tadao Ando in poured concrete, or Alvar Aalto in brick and wood. Over time, I’ve narrowed down the 3 to 4 main colours, and the few fabrics, I always go back to. When you work primarily in tan, black, and navy, you can pay more attention to the silhouette, texture and weight.

My style influences are..
Spiritually, Simon Doonan and Diana Vreeland – although life really is too short to wear denim, corduroy, and vintage t-shirts. But aesthetically, Tom Ford and Yves Saint-Laurent. Oddly, they have such opposing temperaments. Ford is bored to death of the French, but Saint-Laurent would have found Ford vulgar. Frankly, life would be unbearable without a bit of vulgarity. I think I’ve been stuck in a brown-blue colour story since I first saw The Hours. I used to think navy and cobalt were cheap and easy – until I saw Viktor & Rolf‘s show inspired by Tilda Swinton.

What keeps you up at night?
My schedule – and what I’ll wear. I prefer to lay out my clothes a week in advance, so that sates the anxiety somewhat. Actually, I sleep pretty well.

I couldn’t live without..
My Longchamp tote full of crap. I’m a bag lady in the body of a man. I take comfort in the fact that I’ll always have alcohol swabs at the ready, a sweater and an umbrella for changes in weather, and a shoe horn to avert a hairy loafer situation.

Where would you like to live?
Anywhere with good Internet, a gym, and music.

Three items on your wishlist
01.  I don’t want for much, but I guess a bigger monitor would be nice.
02.  I could live with another Chronotech watch.
03.  My wallet no longer spells “Prada” – just “Prad”. So maybe a new one, but only in the same exact colour and model.

Three tasks on your bucket list
01.  Launch a fashion magazine – but that’s coming out in January.
02.  Start a men’s clothing line.
03.  Exhibit at Ars Electronica.

What do you most value in your friends?
Drive. Sluggards just bore the crap out of me. I wish they’d go away and find someone else to suck the life out of.

My defining personality trait is..
My psychic describes my mind as “rojak“. I’m just a bit too everything.
